Search Engine Optimization & Search Engine Marketing Enhancement

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a methodology used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a form of Internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) primarily through paid advertising. Remember though, for SEO and SEM to be an effective campaign it needs to be done on a website you control 100%.

Reputation management is the influencing and/or control of an individual’s or business’s reputation. Originally a public relations term, the advancement of Internet and social media use have made it primarily an issue of search results. Ethical forms of reputation management include responding to customer complaints, asking sites to take down incorrect information and using online feedback to influence product development.

Both SEO and Reputation Management are two area of consultation that are highly abused due to the fact that the results can be rather vague and misunderstood. Many companies sell these services and cannot provide this service for themselves. I have over 400 internet domains and as such I get inundated with numerous calls everyday someone wanting to provide me with SEO and a new website for these domains. I will simply ask the person where their company is ranked on Google for the particular product or service. Invariably they will reply with some ridiculous notion that they are not concerned with ranking their company website. Usually they don’t have a website since they are using Gmail as their corporate webmail provider. These “SEO Experts” are nothing of the sort since they are not a real company and have no clue as to how SEO works and are reselling for someone else. Ask where their website is ranked in Google. If someone is going to sell SEO they better be able to use it on their website.
